March 4, 2010
Jimmie Johnson goes for his third consecutive victory at a place where he has three career wins.
Race No. 4: Kobalt Tools 500 from (1 p.m. ET Sunday on FOX). Green at 1:16 p.m. ET.
1—Top-10s for Bobby Labonte in the 13 races since the last of his six victories at AMS in 2003—a fifth-place finish in the fall of ’03. His best result since has been 12th (twice).
2—Times teammates finished 1-2 at Atlanta: March 1997 (Dale Jarrett and Ernie Irvan, Robert Yates Racing); March 2008 (Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart, Joe Gibbs Racing).
4—Drivers who registered top-10 finishes in both 2009 Atlanta races: Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne and Brian Vickers. Harvick had top-five finishes in both.
4—Times in the past seven races the driver who has led the most laps has won.
5—Times in the 101-race history at Atlanta there has been a last-lap pass for the victory, including twice in the 25 races since the track was reconfigured to its current 1.54-mile quad-oval in 1997: Bobby Labonte (November 2001) and Carl Edwards (March ’05). The winning pass has occurred with less than 25 laps to go in 18 of those 25 races.
5—Different teams which have won at Atlanta in the past five races: Hendrick Motorsports (Jimmie Johnson); Joe Gibbs Racing (Kyle Busch); Roush Fenway Racing (Carl Edwards); Penske Racing (Kurt Busch); Richard Petty Motorsports (Kasey Kahne).
6—Combined wins in the past 11 races for Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards, each with three. Edwards swept the season in 2005, including his first career victory, and Johnson won both races in ’07. Kasey Kahne (two) is the only other driver with multiple victories at AMS during that span.
6—Top-three finishes in 11 races for Carl Edwards, including three victories. He also has two seventh-place finishes at AMS and three results of 37th or worse.
6.7—Average starting position for Ryan Newman, best among active drivers. He scored top-10 starts in 11 of his first 12 races, including an Atlanta-record six consecutive poles from 2003-05 and seven overall, but has started 12th or worse in the past four.
8—Wins at Atlanta for Dodge, including a sweep of last year’s races: Kurt Busch (spring) and Kasey Kahne.
12—Victories for Chevrolet in the 25 races since Atlanta was reconfigured, but none in the past two years. Pontiac is second with five, followed by Ford with four, Dodge with three and Toyota with one.
12—Jeff Gordon’s worst finish in the past nine races. He hasn’t finished worse than ninth in any other race during that span. His five consecutive top-10s is the longest current streak.
14—Most starts of any driver on this week’s entry list without a top-10 finish at Atlanta—Casey Mears. He’s finished 12th twice.
17—Races won from a top-10 starting position in the past 25 races, including 16 of the past 19. Among those, the past nine spring races at AMS have been won from a top-10 starting position, including Kasey Kahne in 2006, the only winner from the pole since the track was reconfigured in 1997.
790—Laps led by Tony Stewart in the past 25 races, most of any driver. However, he hasn’t led in any of the past five races at AMS.
