Solberg takes lead in Rally Japan

SAPPORO, Japan (AP)—Norway’s Petter Solberg took the overall lead in the RallyJapan on Friday.

Solberg, driving a Citroen, won the first two of Friday’s eight specialstages to open up a gap of 9.4 seconds over two-time Rally Japan winner MikkoHirvonen.

Sebastien Loeb of France finished in sixth place.

Loeb has a chance to win a seventh consecutive World Rally Championshiptitle. He opened up a 58-point lead over compatriot Sebastien Ogier afterwinning the Rally of Germany last month and leads the standings with four roundsremaining.

Loeb would need to win this weekend and have Ogier, Jari-Matti Latvala,Petter Solberg and Dani Sordo all finish lower than seventh.
